Pinellas County Approves Gateway Expressway Project

On August 9, 2016 the Pinellas County Board of County Commissions unanimously approved an agreement with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) for the Gateway Expressway project.  This project has been in the works for nearly 17 years. Construction on the $412 million project is expected to start in the summer of 2017 and be finished in the summer of 2021.

Once complete, the Gateway Expressway will provide a faster, safer, and more convenient road network serving the Pinellas County Gateway area of central Pinellas county.  Plans for the project include connecting US 19 to I-275 along the 118th Avenue North east-west Corridor and the Bayside Bridge to the new expressway travelling north and south. The project will include toll roads and elevated limited access roads and will also maintain the existing road networks giving drivers a choice as to whether to use the toll roads.

The Gateway Expressway is a separate project from the Tampa Bay Express (TBX) project. However, the Gateway Express is a vital part of the region’s expanding road network and will tie into I-275/Howard Franklin Bridge into Tampa which is part of TBX.
