In an unfortunate situation for California farmers, more than 70 acres of land was taken by the government to develop the California Bullet Train project. Eminent domain, the legal process by which government takes private land, can be complicated, particularly in California with multiple agencies involved. But the rail authority’s constantly changing plans, thin state staff and reliance on outside attorneys have made it more difficult in this instance.
